Current Licensure Efforts

What is Licensure?
Licensure would allow art therapists in Pennsylvania to demonstrate to clients and other professionals that they have met or exceeded the field’s established standards. These standards include earning a master’s degree, completing post-graduate supervised experience, and obtaining credentials from the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB), which verifies adherence to educational, continuing education, and ethical requirements within the profession.

Importance of Licensure
Licensure is important for art therapists because it ensures professional standards, protects clients, and enhances credibility within the mental health field. It allows for insurance reimbursement, supports ethical qualified practice, and strengthens the recognition of art therapy as a legitimate and regulated health profession.

Important Updates from the Licensure Committee
PAATA has been actively working to advance professional licensure for art therapists in Pennsylvania, and we’re thrilled to share an important update: House Bill 1733 has officially been introduced! This marks a critical step forward in our advocacy efforts. To support this initiative, PAATA hosted a virtual Meet Our Lobbyists event on Thursday, July 17, 2025. We heard directly from the dedicated team at Duane Morris Government Strategies, who are now advocating on our behalf in Harrisburg. The event was well-attended, informative, and energizing... giving attendees a deeper understanding of the legislative process and how our voices can help move this bill forward.
Our Licensure Committee continues to meet monthly to strategize and move this important work forward. We also plan to resubmit the Sunrise Application with revisions later this year or early next year. Our efforts are focused on building strong legislative relationships, advocating for the profession, and ultimately protecting the public by ensuring qualified, credentialed providers in Pennsylvania.

Thank you for your continued support and stay engaged and connected for future advocacy opportunities!
